A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on Monday seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
