A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
