India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze After Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of Delhi showed an air quality index over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy level set by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable levels.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments

For the past four years, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as winter sets in.

Nevertheless recently, the newly elected city government petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and environment".

Legal Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judges agreed to the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Many monitoring devices throughout the city recorded pollution peaking around late evening to the most severe readings observed during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from across the border following the festivities.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to 70% higher the peak levels ever measured in China's capital, which was once regarded as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Multiple Pollution Sources

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing toxic smog that remains stagnant over the city as winter air arrives.

Medical and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million people residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous research.

This pollution results in high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand early mortalities each year in the city.
