Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
