The January recruitment period is always a time of significant rumour and possible major transfers. Several notable footballers are being connected to moves out of their current teams. This article explores some of the key figures that might be on the move this month.

A. Semenyo

Although Ghana's inability to qualify for the AFCON, this has kept the player in contention, reports suggest an important transfer is close. This Bournemouth attacker has a deal with a £65 million release clause applicable for a two-week period at the start of the month. Recent reports suggest Manchester City look to have won the race for his signature. The veteran German shot-stopper is now as third-choice at Barça following new coach Flick. Having fallen out of favour and had an operation, a winter departure looks increasingly likely. Aston Villa were initially linked as a possible suitor, but that move currently seems off. Instead, clubs from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are reportedly expressing curiosity in the keeper.

I. Toney

The proven English centre-forward has continued scoring frequently in the Middle East. A return to the Premier League could enhance his fading chances of making the national World Cup. This much-admired Dutch teenage midfielder has earned comparisons to a Belgian superstar for his playing style. After impressing at the Under-19 European Championship, he has broken into the AZ Alkmaar side. The 19-year-old is heavily expected to make a big-money transfer this month. Newcastle United are believed to be leading the chase, but could face stiff rivalry from Real Madrid for a signing valued at around £22 million.
