That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

The apparent and clear truth that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
