New research reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
